Storehouse Local Museum Sairi Yashiki

The mansion of a wealthy merchant in the Edo period

The Saito family, a wealthy merchant who flourished in Marumorimachi for seven generations from the Edo period to the Showa period, left their valuable architectural structures, costumes, art works, and other items to the museum’s collection, which is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The museum also holds various seasonal events such as “Dragon Boat Festival,” “Saito’s New Year’s Celebration,” and “Saito’s Hina Festival. Why not start by experiencing the culture and history of Marumorimachi here?

From the late Edo period to the early Showa period, Risuke Saito was a wealthy merchant who prospered for seven generations, developing a wide range of businesses, starting with the kimono and futon (thick cloth) business and expanding to miso and soy sauce brewing, sewing, and other businesses. His residence and warehouses were renovated and opened to the public as “Kura-no-Hokodate-kan” (local museum of warehouses).

In 2010, 12 structures, including six buildings and structures such as storehouses and stone baths, were registered as Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan.

The museum holds various special exhibitions throughout the year, including three major ones a year, “Dragon Boat Festival,” “Sairi’s New Year’s Celebration,” and “Sairi’s Hina Festival, Visitors can experience a time slip back to the Taisho Era.

The “Taisho-roman Cafe” on the second floor of the storehouse is a relaxing antique-style space with light streaming in through the windows, where the “set menu of the month,” which changes monthly and offers seasonal dishes, is very popular.
