Discover the Blue Impulse and the Charms of Higashimatsushima

Michi-no-Eki Higashimatsushima is a roadside station and tourism hub in Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture. It introduces visitors to the area’s local specialties, cuisine, sightseeing attractions, and culture. The facility is directly connected to the Yamoto Parking Area on the inbound lane of the Sanriku Coastal Expressway, making it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the Tohoku region by car.

The facility includes a local products shop, restaurants, a light-meal area, a tourist information center, and a convenience store. Visitors can do much more than simply take a break: they can enjoy local food, shop for souvenirs, gather sightseeing information, and experience attractions related to the famous Blue Impulse aerobatic team.

The interior design is inspired by the Blue Impulse, a symbol strongly associated with Higashimatsushima and the nearby Japan Air Self-Defense Force Matsushima Air Base. The facility offers something for aviation enthusiasts as well as families and travelers of all ages.

A New Tourism Hub Opened in November 2024

Michi-no-Eki Higashimatsushima was officially registered as a Michi-no-Eki roadside station in August 2024 and opened on November 27, 2024. The facility combines regional promotion and tourism services with rest facilities for road users and a convenience store.

From local roads, the facility can be reached via Yuriko Line Municipal Road. Travelers using the Sanriku Coastal Expressway can also stop directly from the inbound lane of the Yamoto Parking Area, making it a practical rest stop during a road trip through Miyagi and the wider Tohoku region.

Experience the World of the Blue Impulse

Higashimatsushima is well known as the home of the Blue Impulse, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s famous aerobatic flight team based at Matsushima Air Base. Michi-no-Eki Higashimatsushima incorporates this local connection throughout its design, including an interior inspired by an aircraft hangar.

One of the main attractions is the observation deck on the second floor. From here, visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding area and, when conditions and schedules permit, may be able to see Blue Impulse training flights around Matsushima Air Base.

Training flights depend on weather and operational schedules, so seeing the aircraft is not guaranteed. Nevertheless, the observation deck is an enjoyable place for aviation enthusiasts and anyone interested in seeing the local landscape from above.

Views Toward the Ishinomaki Area and the Pacific Ocean

The second-floor observation deck provides views across Higashimatsushima, the Ishinomaki area, and toward the Pacific Ocean. Seating and dining areas are also available, allowing visitors to enjoy a meal or coffee while taking in the scenery.

The deck is worth visiting even if there is no Blue Impulse flight. It provides a relaxing place to take a break during a drive while enjoying the coastal scenery and atmosphere of Higashimatsushima.

A Blue Impulse T-4 Aircraft on Display

The outdoor plaza features an actual T-4 aircraft formerly used by the Blue Impulse. The aircraft on display is No. 46-5731, which served as a Blue Impulse aircraft until March 2020.

The aircraft was loaned free of charge by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force following a request from Higashimatsushima City. Although it was originally expected to be displayed when the roadside station opened, arrangements concerning transportation and its exhibition took additional time.

The aircraft was finally opened to the public on February 27, 2026. Seeing an aircraft that actually flew as part of the Blue Impulse at close range offers a memorable experience, particularly for aviation fans and children fascinated by airplanes.

What Is the Blue Impulse?

Blue Impulse is the nickname of the aerobatic team belonging to the 11th Squadron of the 4th Air Wing of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. Based at Matsushima Air Base, the team performs precision aerial demonstrations at air shows and other events.

The team is known for flying several aircraft in carefully coordinated formations and for using smoke trails to create distinctive patterns in the sky. At Michi-no-Eki Higashimatsushima, visitors can discover the connection between this famous aviation team and the local community through the facility’s design, exhibits, and experiences.

Experience a Blue Impulse Flight in VR

The tourist information area also includes a VR experience space. Through virtual reality, visitors can experience a 360-degree view of a Blue Impulse flight, offering an immersive perspective that differs from watching an actual air show.

Staff members provide guidance for first-time VR users, and visitors can choose between a beginner version and a challenge version. A 300-yen cooperation fee is required. Children under seven years old cannot use the VR attraction, while children aged seven to twelve require parental consent and supervision.

A Convenient Kids’ Space for Families

Michi-no-Eki Higashimatsushima also features a kids’ space. Children can become tired during long drives, so having a dedicated place where they can take a break and play makes the facility particularly convenient for families.
