Sendai Castle once stood on a vast site measuring 500 m east to west and 1,000 m north to south, with the main citadel alone covering an area of 20,000 tsubo. Remnants of the castle can be seen in the stone walls built at the top of the mountain, as well as in the path leading up to the castle, the remains of the San-no-maru area, and the reconstructed side turrets.
From the observatory near the statue of Lord Date Masamune mounted on a horse in the Honmaru, you can see the center of Sendai City and Sendai Bay, and the remains of a large hall and the Sendai Castle Observation Hall, a guidance facility, are open to the public. The Ni-no-Maru area, which serves as the Tohoku University Kawauchi Campus, is the launching site for the Sendai Tanabata Festival fireworks display. The Sendai Castle Ruins are also a picturesque place to see the fireworks display.
