Located in a mountain village just outside the Akiu Onsen Hot Spring Resort, the village is home to artisans of traditional Miyagi crafts.
The craftspeople continue to live and work here. There are seven workshops, including traditional kokeshi dolls and Sendai tansu (chests), where visitors can see the superb craftsmanship up close, and there is also a hands-on experience menu, so why not try making your own original work?
There is also a walking trail, and from an azumaya built at the eastern end of the “Kokeshi Forest,” you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Akiu Onsen Ryokan district.
Various types of business are available, including Sendai chests, kokeshi dolls, buried woodwork, dyeing and weaving, and wood carving. Visitors can observe the craftsmen’s skills up close, and if they find a traditional craft they like, they can purchase it or order it.
Visitors can also try their hand at painting kokeshi dolls and other crafts (reservation required).

15 minutes drive west from Sendai Minami Interchange on Tohoku Expressway.
From JR Sendai Station, take the bus bound for “Kawasakimachi” and get off at “Akiu Kogei no Sato” (about 40 minutes).
